Many people don’t know how to read a sun cream label

During the warm weather, you must protect yourself with a sun cream. But, if you don’t know what a sun cream should contain, you are not alone. According to a recent study, many people don’t know to read a label on a sun cream. According to a study, conducted at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, less than 50% of the participants, read and understood how well that sun cream can protect them from sunburns and skin cancer. Also, only 49% of the participants knew that SPF stands for ‘’sun protection factor’’.

Dr. Jennifer Stein from the New York University's Langone Medical Center, said that many people ask her about sun creams. They want to know what kind of protection they can get from a sun cream. All of those people want to know what they should look for. During the summer, more people are concerned about which sun cream they should use.

Prior 2012, sun cream manufacturers had to display only several information about their products. For example, they had to display the SPF rating. It tells you how well that sun cream can protect you from UVB rays. You should know that an SPF of 50 will filter 98% of the UVB rays. An SPF of 30 will filter 97% of UVB rays.

Participants in the study, didn’t know the meaning of the SPF. Also, they didn’t know how well that sun cream can protect them from UVB and skin cancer. They didn’t even know that the sun cream with higher SPF ratings offer you a better protection.
