What are Eyelash Extensions and What Are the Hazards?

Beauty trends often come and go. Lipsticks and long eyelashes are probably the only two beauty trends that have lasted forever. In recent years, a new alternative for mascara is eyelash extensions.

What Are Eyelash Extensions?

Eyelash extensions are individual fibers either one by one or as a small group glued onto your natural eyelashes to increase their length. They're often made out of nylon, but other types of synthetic fibers have also been used, as well as silk and even natural fur. Professional glue is used to bond the eyelash extensions to your natural eyelashes.

Are They Safe?

The eyelash extensions themselves are generally safe. It's the glue used to bond the synthetic extensions in place that often causes problems, such as irritation and allergic reactions.

Other specific dangers of using eyelash extensions include:

  • Infection of the cornea and/or eyelid
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Loss of eyelashes (can be temporary or permanent)
  • Forceps wounds

Some eye doctors and researchers also believe that using eyelash extensions increase your risk of dry eyes. Apparently, there's a reason why our eyelashes are as long as they are. If they're longer than their natural length, they can increase airflow on your eye's surface, which can cause dry eyes.

If you're thinking about getting eyelash extensions, make sure that you do the following first:

  • Educate yourself about the risks, as well as benefits, and make sure that the pros outweigh the cons
  • Find a certified aesthetician that works at a reputable practice to handle the procedure
  • Don't be afraid to ask about the adhesive ingredients used for your eyelash extension procedure beforehand

Even if you do all these things, the risk of complications resulting from using eyelash extensions will still be there, but at least they will be minimized.
